My Big Fat Big Society Wedding

My Big Fat Big Society Wedding was inspired by our local council which planned to fire all the Lollipop people in the borough in August 2011, including the two at my daughter’s (aged seven) school, where there is a very busy junction with lots of bad-tempered inner-city drivers trying to get out of South London as quickly as possible.

At the time there were 24 Lollipop people across Lambeth on annual salaries of roughly £6000, while the chief exec’s salary was more to the tune of 6 figures. On 29 April 2011, we witnessed and passively participated in the expensive, vulgar, medieval, absurd, grotesque spectacle of a royal wedding. The day before the wedding the police arrested dozens of activists for thought crime while Facebook closed down around 60 activist pages which was quite helpful really because for a while there we didn’t really know what Big Society was supposed to mean.
